Psychosexual Problems in men
Psychosexual problems can have serious debilitating affects in our relationships and also affect our lives which may lead to depression, anxiety and a loss of confidence and low self-esteem. It can also lead to avoidance of relationships and intimacy.
Men often remain silent about such conditions to avoid embarrassment or for the fear of undermining their own sexual identity. Or perhaps they fear something is wrong with them and that there is nothing to be done. Wrong! You are not alone because research has shown that 1 in 3 men will suffer at least one episode of sexual problems throughout their lives. This increases significantly if a man is suffering from depression, low mood, anxiety or with the consumption of alcohol and drugs.
Hypnotherapy can help with psychosexual dysfunctions/disorders where there is an underlying psychological origin. In fact many sexual disorders are often the result of anxiety, body image and hyper-sensitivity to body sensations. Moreover, sexual performance may be linked to situational factors, especially habits formed over time which then turn into a self-defeating behaviour. There may also be issues of shame or feelings of being judged either because of our culture, peers or parents.
Hypnosis helps by not only reducing anxiety but helps by reconditioning or re-learning by removing the negative self-fulfilling thoughts with positive suggestions and allowing the client to accept who they are and their own sexual feelings. The hypnotherapist may use techniques such as cognitive rehearsing to helping the client in building up their self-esteem and self-confidence. In cases of penile hyper-sensitivity the dial method can be used in which the client is taught to manage their sensations by turning down an imagery dial. In cases of DE the man will be taught about putting their sexual needs first and using the dial method to turn up their sensations.
Common Psychosexual problems for Men are:
-
Not being able to keep an erection (This may only be present when attempting penetration when using a condom)
-
Premature ejaculation (PE)
-
Delayed ejaculation (DE)
-
Lack of sexual desire
-
Not being able to achieve orgasm
It is important that if you suffer from any of the above symptoms to always seek medical help before psychosexual dysfunction can be explored, in order to rule out any underlying physiological cause.
How many sessions will I need to have?
This depends on the individual and how long they have had the condition. I usually recommend a minimum of 6 sessions. For PE and DE I usually recommend at least 8-10 sessions as these sessions involve training in sensitivity management using the dial method. If the disorder has been present for a longer duration then more sessions would be needed including hypnoanalysis if there are deep routed course. I will discuss this with the client at the initial consultation and through the course of hypnotherapy.
